Salt & Pepper Vietnamese Kitchen

2/1 Margaret St, Norwood

When you’re in need of a little soul food, nothing hits the spot like a bowl of pho. At this little eatery just metres from The Parade, beef bones are cooked down over three days and three nights to concentrate flavour in the rich, anise-scented broth. When it’s ready, fresh beef and thick rice noodles go into the mix along with handfuls of crunchy bean sprouts and fragrant microherbs. A specially formulated herbal super broth gives Salt & Pepper’s pho an added health kick, and a separate vegetable base means they can also cater to vegetarians and vegans.

But if you want to upgrade your meal in a glass to a feast, tuck into a hearty Irish stew of slow cooked beef with Guinness, onion, capsicum, celery & carrots served with a healthy portion of creamy garlic mash.

Pavé Cafe

In a crowded field, this rustic little courtyard cafe serves some of the best coffee in Norwood, but over the cooler months there’s another major drawcard: hearty bowls of steaming soup that change weekly to take advantage of the freshest available produce. Check the blackboard for delights like spiced tomato, lentil and vegetable soup with spiced harissa cream and coriander or thick potato and leek soup laden with bacon crumb and chive cream, but whatever the flavour you can guarantee it will warm you up nicely after a morning walk.

Rich, creamy and spicy with just the right amount of crunch – a good laksa is hard to beat. And this family-run restaurant has some of the best going around, packing the thick coconut broth and red curry sauce with egg noodles, bean sprouts, vegetables, tofu and chunks of chicken or seafood. Best of all, because each dish is individually cooked and spiced to order, the kitchen can make sure your order has the perfect level of zing.

As satisfying as a bowl of soup can be, a real hunger occasionally demands a little something extra. Especially if you’ve been sitting in the stands at Norwood Oval for a few hours. Fortunately this busy spot at the corner of Osmond Terrace and The Parade is open 24 hours a day to serve Adelaide’s most iconic meal; a circle of golden, flaky pastry filled with thick chunks of beef and gravy, all swimming in bright green pea soup. And if you want to put your own twist on tradition, you can get the pie floater with any of the 30 varieties of pies made fresh every day.
